What does a pine beetle infestation actually look like?
The clearest early signs are on the bark and in the canopy, not just an intuition that something looks off: popcorn-shaped blobs of resin on the trunk called pitch tubes, fine boring dust caught in bark crevices or spiderwebs at the base, and a canopy that fades from green to yellow to red-brown starting at the top rather than evenly across the tree. Peel back a section of bark on a recently killed tree and you'll usually find winding, S-shaped tunnels underneath — the galleries where the beetles have been feeding.
Once needles have gone red-brown, the tree is already dead even though it's still standing — that color change lags behind the actual kill by some weeks, so a tree that looks only half-affected from the road is often further gone than it appears up close.
How is oak wilt different from a beetle problem?
