How Do You Know If a Tree Is Dying?

A tree can hold a full canopy and already be failing at the base. The signals worth acting on are structural, and most of them are near the ground.

Start with the scratch test

Take a fingernail or a pocket knife and scrape a small patch of bark on a twig, then on a lower branch, then on the trunk. Green and moist underneath means living tissue. Brown, dry and brittle means that part is dead.

Work from the outside in. Dead twigs with a living trunk is a tree under stress that may recover. Dead tissue at the trunk itself is a different conversation. Test in several places around the tree, since decline is frequently one-sided and a single sample tells you very little.

The root flare is where failures begin

A healthy trunk widens as it meets the ground, spreading into visible roots. If your tree goes into the soil like a telephone pole with no flare at all, something is wrong: it was planted too deep, mulch has been piled against it for years, or soil has been added over the roots.

That matters because buried root collars hold moisture against bark that was never meant to be wet, and decay follows. It is one of the most common causes of otherwise healthy-looking trees failing, and around here it is often the result of well-intentioned landscaping.

Look for soil heaving or cracking on one side of the base, particularly on the side away from the prevailing lean. That is the root plate beginning to lift, and it is among the most serious signs a tree can give you. A tree doing that should be treated as urgent.

Fungal brackets mean interior decay

Shelf-like growths on the trunk or at the base are the fruiting bodies of fungi that are already consuming the wood inside. By the time a conk appears on the outside, the decay behind it is established rather than beginning.

Their position tells you something. At the base or on major roots, they point to root and butt rot, which is the pattern that produces whole-tree failure. Higher on the trunk they suggest decay in that section, which more often produces a trunk snap at that height.

Mushrooms in the soil near a tree are more ambiguous, since many are ordinary soil fungi. A cluster growing directly from a root or from the flare is the one to take seriously.

Bark, cracks and cavities

Bark that is falling away in sheets to expose smooth wood underneath is a dead section. Small patches can be survivable; a strip running a significant distance up the trunk is not, particularly if it spans much of the circumference.

Vertical cracks that run deep, and any crack where the two sides move independently when the tree sways, indicate a structural split. Cavities matter less by size than by what remains: a hollow trunk with a sound shell of intact wood can stand for decades, while a modest cavity with thin walls and soft wood cannot.

Canopy signs and what they mean

Thinning that starts at the top and works down is a classic decline pattern, because the highest points are hardest to supply. Dead branches in the upper canopy while the lower limbs look fine points the same way.

Leaves that emerge small, pale or late compared with the same species nearby is a stress signal worth investigating. So is a heavy, unusual seed crop, which is sometimes a tree putting resources into reproduction because it is under threat. Sprouts erupting along the trunk and at the base often mean the canopy is not doing its job.

Local pressures in central Arkansas

Clay soils here shrink and swell dramatically between a wet spring and a dry August, and that movement works on root plates over years. A tree that has stood through decades of it can reach a point where a routine storm finishes the job.

Construction damage is the quiet killer, and the delay confuses people. Trenching for a line, compaction from equipment parked over the root zone, or grade changes during a build can kill a tree three to five years later, long after anyone connects the two events. If work happened near a tree that is now declining, that is very likely your answer.

What to do about it

Not every declining tree needs removing. Many respond to correcting the cause, whether that is excavating a buried root collar, relieving compaction, or reducing weight in a heavy limb. That is a better outcome than a stump.

The ones that need urgent attention are trees with soil lifting at the base, large dead limbs over a house or a driveway, significant conks at the root flare, or a lean that has changed recently. If a tree is within falling distance of a structure and showing any of those, get it looked at rather than watched. A hazard assessment costs a fraction of a removal and far less than the alternative.
